| Centre alumnus explores the paranormal in his art
RELEASED: Jan. 13, 2005
Adam Kenney graduated from Centre in 1998. At Centre, Kenney worked in the hot glass studio and studied with Centre Stodghill Professor of Art and internationally known glass artist Stephen Rolfe Powell. For the past three years, Kenney has worked under Curtis Brock at the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tenn., as he pursues post-baccalaureate studies in fine art. Last fall, Kenney returned to Centre to serve as the graduate assistant in studio art. Judith Pointer Jia, Centre assistant professor of art, says, "Adam has been a wonderful addition to our studios. The fact that he's worked for and studied under several professionals in the glass field has given him valuable perspective and insight into the art-making process. Our students are responding to this and benefiting from it." According to Kenney, his objects and installations are meant to "evoke a playful sense of uneasiness." He says he "likens his work to paranormal experiences which both repel and attract us with mystery."
Kenney continues, "Whether playful or morbid, my aim is to inspire remarkable personal narratives as a response to the unknown." - end - Founded in 1819, Centre College is ranked among the U.S. News top 50 national liberal arts colleges.
