A Bringing Together: Centre Homecoming 2005

DANVILLE, KY—Homecoming 2005 at Centre College will be an event-filled "bringing together" celebration. This year's homecoming highlights the dedication of The College Centre, the state-of-the-art academic/athletic complex. And, as always, Homecoming is a bringing together of old friends, familiar places and good times.

Homecoming activities begin on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 8 p.m. with The College Centre dedication convocation address by William G. Bowen, former president of Princeton University and current president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Bowen will analyze current issues facing liberal arts institutions.

Alumni are encouraged to stop by the Chenault Alumni House on Friday, Oct. 14, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 15, between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., for the annual Alumni Reception.

Glass-blowing demonstrations take place in the Jones Visual Arts Center on Friday, Oct. 14, 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 15, 9-11 a.m. Friday's demonstration features nationally known Seattle artists Janusz Pozniak and Dave "Big Daddy" Walters. Saturday's demonstration features Centre Alumni in Five on Fire: Paul Hugues '92, D.H. All are invited to The College Centre dedication on Friday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m. at the arch between Crounse and Sutcliffe halls. Already receiving rave reviews from students, faculty and staff, The College Centre brings major benefits to the entire Centre community: the latest technology, enhanced access to research materials, great study areas, and outstanding exercise and recreation facilities.

At the Norton Center for the Arts, ABBA–The Music, an officially sanctioned tribute to the Swedish pop sensations, takes place Friday, Oct. 14, at 8:30 p.m. in Newlin Hall. For ticket prices and availability call toll-free (877) 448-7469.

The annual Alumni Homecoming 5K race begins Saturday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 a.m. in front of Young Hall.

An alumni book signing featuring Virginia Ragland Biles '56 takes place Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. at the new location of the Centre College Bookstore on the corner of Main and Third streets.

The Distinguished and Young Alumnus award recipients will be presented, along with the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. in Weisiger Theatre.

This year's honorees are:

  • Distinguished Alumnus Award: Walter M. Herd '83, James V. Oppel Jr. '75, Mary Cronan Oppel '74, and Paxton Marshall Wilt '64
  • Young Alumnus Award: Chandler Van Voorhis '94
  • Athletic Hall of Fame inductees: Beth Grohmann Burnett '92, Carlton Seelye Shier IV '92, Marcia Mount Shoop '91, and the 1955 football team.

The football team takes on Maryville College in a non-conference game at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15.  The Homecoming king and queen will be presented during halftime. Both soccer teams will be in action against Sewanee. The women take the field at 11:30 a.m., and the men at 1:30 p.m.

To conclude the Homecoming festivities, Nervous Melvin and the Mistakes will perform Saturday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. at the Charles T. Hazelrigg Gymnasium in Sutcliffe Hall. All are invited to join in this Centre tradition.
