| Schulten qualifies as one of nation's best divers
RELEASED: March 10, 2005
At last year's championships, Schulten placed 18th on the three-meter and 21st on the one-meter board. His goal this year is to place in the top eight to earn All-American status or top 16 for honorable mention. "I felt lucky to get into nationals last year," Schulten says. "I didn't think I was doing as well this year, but my scores were better. This is definitely an encouragement to get better next year." Schulten is the only Centre student competing. "Division III is a lot bigger than I thought," he says. "And being from Centre is an honor because Centre is much stronger academically than a majority of the schools represented." To be selected, Schulten sent a videotape of his qualifying meet to the national committee for review. The committee chooses the top 22 athletes to compete in the national meet. "For Dustin just to make the nationals means he is one of the top 22 divers in the nation, which is a huge accomplishment in itself," head coach Dean Brownley says.
He and his twin sister Courtenay '07 are the youngest of nine children; three of his brothers, Christopher '89, Kent Andrew '91 and Thad '92 also competed on Centre's swimming and diving team. Courtenay is a current Colonel swimmer. Schulten competes March 17 on the one-meter board and March 19 on the three-meter. - end - Founded in 1819, Centre College is ranked among the U.S. News top 50 national liberal arts colleges.
