| Student life is accepting proposals for theme housing
RELEASED: Feb. 17, 2005
From now until Feb. 28, all Centre students can send their proposal ideas to the student life office. Options for themed housing will be selected based on the mission of the theme itself, sponsorship of a faculty or staff member and available facilities. Examples include outdoor pursuits, healthy living, stress-free, study-intensive, foreign language and global connections. "We want the students to be creative and have fun," says Sarah Scott Hall, director of residence life. The themed groups will be encouraged to bring in speakers, decorate, provide programs for the campus or perform community service based on their theme. Students living in themed areas will be required to complete a minimum of three programs per term. "There are endless possibilities," says Ann Young, director of housing at Centre. This program builds on existing theme housing and brings it to a higher level of planning and organization. Centre currently offers a more informal version of theme housing. There are study-intensive and substance-free halls, as well as the ecology and international houses. Hall says the new themed units will be created according to a more formalized process in consultation with a faculty or staff advisor and with clear programming goals. Of course, they will also provide students an opportunity to have fun with their living environment. Once themed housing units are selected, all rising sophomores, juniors and seniors can sign up in the Student Life Office March 14-18. Locations for theme housing will be chosen based upon the number of students who sign up. Proposals are due Feb. 28 to the student life office.
