Class of 2010: Another banner year

RELEASED: March 23, 2006

DANVILLE, KY—The Centre College Class of 2010 is shaping up to be one of Centre's biggest and best ever, according to Carey Thompson, dean of admission and student financial planning.

Centre has received nearly 2100 applications this year, another all-time high for the College and a five percent increase over last year’s record mark. Slightly less than half of Centre’s applications have come from outside Kentucky, continuing a trend of improved results out-of-state.

"We're very pleased to see significant increases in the numbers of students from outside the Commonwealth," Thompson says. "It demonstrates that Centre's mark on the national landscape is growing by leaps and bounds."

While Centre’s application pool is still built on a foundation of very strong Kentucky applicants, the College is attracting more applicants from Tennessee, Indiana, Virginia, Texas, Georgia and several mid-Atlantic and northeastern states, as well as a number of international applicants. Among the new out-of-state students are the members of Centre’s first “Posse,” a group of ten outstanding student-leaders from the Boston area, coming to Centre through an agreement with the Posse Foundation.

"Not only is the application pool bigger, but the average ACT of applicants is up over 28, as high as it's ever been," says Bob Nesmith, director of admission. "Currently, our acceptance rate is just under 60 percent, the lowest it's ever been."

The total projected enrollment for this coming fall is approximately 1120, of which 300 will be freshmen.

Centre of Attention Day for accepted seniors will take place April 22.
