So many books, so little time: NPR critic visits campus

RELEASED: March 2, 2006

Imagine being able to combine your passion with your profession. Maureen Corrigan is lucky enough to do just that.

DANVILLE, KY—Maureen Corrigan, book critic for National Public Radio's Fresh Air, will give a public talk about her 2005 memoir titled, Leave Me Alone, I'm Reading and about her experiences in the world of literary reviews. The free event will take place at Centre College on March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Weisiger Theatre.

Books have been the center of Maureen Corrigan's life for as long as she can remember. Described as "part memoir, part coming-of-age story, and part reflection on favorite and influential books," Leave Me Alone, I’m Reading invites readers to accompany Corrigan on the journey of a lifetime and see how her life has been changed by reading.

"Maureen presents her readers with a veritable treasure of titles and a generous array of personal stories and anecdotes," says Julie James, visiting assistant professor of language at Centre. "She reveals how each of the literary works mentioned—from the classics of the Victorian era to the hard-boiled detective fiction of her graduate school 'down-time'—have contributed to the shaping of her life and career as a bookworm."

Maureen Corrigan teaches literature at Georgetown University. She received the 1999 Edgar Award for Criticism presented by the Mystery Writers of America and has written reviews and essays for the New York Times, Newsday, The Nation, the Boston Globe and the Village Voice. She is a reviewer and columnist for Book World and the Washington Post.
