Centre's AEGON Gallery Exhibit Showcases "Industrial Aesthetic" RELEASED: Jan. 12, 2006
The exhibit "a to b" will feature component-based, mixed media, industrial porcelain sculpture. Judith Pointer Jia, assistant professor of art at Centre comments, "The work in this show was made last spring while Derek was a resident artist at the Kohler Factory. His work expresses ideas ranging from the beauty of industrial forms to formal patterns created by repetition. These large pieces made of precisely cast porcelain forms fitted together with rubber gaskets and bolts make puzzling, intriguing forms to ponder." Harding says his work is "an interplay of slip-cast porcelain with commercial and industrial material that allude to an unknown function. The surfaces are slick and seductive and employ a sensuality of form and a clean industrial aesthetic." Harding holds a master of fine arts degree from Louisiana State University. He has been a visiting artist at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, the University of Wisconsin Sheboygan and the University of Northern Michigan.
