Senior Spotlight: Drew HelmstetterRELEASED: Dec. 14, 2006
"This term I've had the special opportunity to teach Drew Helmstetter in all of my three courses," Keffer said. "Probably not that rare at the College, but here's something special about Drew—he’s been a student of three different languages and three radically different contents in my courses this term: German: Advanced Grammar for majors and minors; French: Introductory French; and Humanities 273: French Thought in Philosophy and Art. This combo must be some kind of first." After even a brief meeting with Helmstetter, a psychology major and German minor, it's easy to understand what makes him stand out for Dr. Keffer: he wasn’t especially impressed with abroad travel when he toured Italy with the CentreSingers in 2005, yet he’s applying for a teaching assistant position in France (or maybe Austria) after graduation, hoping that immersion in the language and culture will give him an appreciation he lacks. He’s taking an entry-level computer science class for the three-week January term simply because it’s a field he’s never looked into before. He’s going camping with friends in the West Virginia mountains over the Christmas break, hoping it will be "as cold as possible just to see how long we can make it." John Wayne meets Nietzsche. When asked what aspect of his Centre experience stood out in his mind, Helmstetter’s tongue-in-cheek response was, "One-hundred-forty-eight hours of Dr. Keffer my senior year." In addition to applying for the seven-month teaching assistantship, Helmstetter's other post-graduation plans include applying to law schools and graduate schools. After four years at Centre, Helmstetter says his liberal arts education has allowed him to leave his options open.
