New Orleans class returns to campus RELEASED: Jan. 19, 2006
DANVILLE, KYCentre College President John Roush and the 17 Centre College students in his "Rainmaking: The Study of and Preparation for Leadership" course have returned safe and sound from New Orleans, where they spent a week helping the Salvation Army in its efforts to feed and access service delivery to local residents whose lives were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The course has garnered a good deal of media attention, including a story in the Lexington Herald-Leader that was syndicated by the Associated Press, as well as an appearance on Lex 18’s Sunday evening news broadcast. It was also featured in the Danville Advocate Messenger. The blog that tells the whole story of the memorable week is being added to daily, as students reflect on their experiences—preparing thousands of meals daily, coping with a round-the-clock schedule, living in military-style quarters at Camp Algiers, visiting the devastated Ninth Ward, getting along with other volunteers and each other. Just click on http://centregulf.blogspot.com/ to read first-hand reports and to view dozens of great photos by award-winning Danville photographer Kirk Schlea, who was volunteering himself with the Salvation Army but found time to document the Centre experience as well. The students in the "Rainmaking" class were not the only members of the Centre community helping out in the Gulf. Alumnus Leonard Napolitano '97, volunteered for two weeks with the Red Cross' Hurricane Katrina relief effort in Biloxi, Miss. Leonard, who works in Washington D.C. for Blackboard and is an Army Reserve officer, wrote an op-ed about his experiences for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
