College gets passionately pink
RELEASED: Oct. 26, 2006
DANVILLE, KY—October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Centre community, as always, has stepped up to the plate.
The women of Kappa Kappa Gamma had fun and raised nearly $200 dollars by participating in Passionately Pink for the Cure™, a crusade to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise money to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The fundraiser is about using passion and creativity to help fulfill the Foundation's promise for the cure through research, education, screening and treatment.
Sarah Langford, a senior from Concord, N.C., is the philanthropy chair of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
“The idea is to get every participant—in our case, women from our chapter—to wear all pink one day in exchange for $5 raised. But in addition to our members wearing pink and donating $5, we also made sugar cookies with pink ribbon frosting and sold each, along with a pink plastic bracelet, a piece of pink candy and a pink ribbon for $1. We raised over $168!" Langford said.
“This fund-raising idea came up when our president, Morgan Cobb (a senior from Corbin, Ky.), saw the president of Susan G. Komen talking about it on the Today Show.”
In addition to the sorority's efforts, on Sat., Oct. 28 at 10 a.m., certified pilates instructor Marlene Settles (finance office) is sponsoring Pilates for Pink at the McDowell Wellness Center. Participants are encouraged to bring a donation for breast cancer research, and enjoy some fun and fitness.
“I’m really excited about hosting our first-ever Pilates for Pink,” Settles said. “I’m hoping for a big crowd to raise money for this worthy cause, and everyone's welcome. We’ll focus on fund raising, fitness and fun!”
