Artist's Homecoming: Awake at AEGON GalleryRELEASED: Oct. 12, 2006
The artist will give a talk about his work in the gallery on Oct. 20 at 3:00 p.m., and a reception for Robinson will be held immediately afterwards from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. These events are free and open to the public. "Emil Robinson is one of the best artists to graduate from Centre," comments Sheldon Tapley, Stodghill professor of art at Centre. "He's a masterful draughtsman, with a great love of the human figure and portraiture; his paintings incorporate beautiful color and dramatic lighting to create a deeply emotional effect." Robinson believes that "any ordinary setting, object or person can be transformed through a three-way relationship between the artist, painting and viewer. "People develop a unique relationship to their environment. The toaster that reminds you of your grandmother might be a piece of junk to me. I trust my own experience when choosing the content of my paintings. The illusionist rendering of space and objects gives the viewer a way to enter the painting, but I must also create an interesting world for a person to explore," Robinson says. Reflecting on his time on campus, Robinson says, "Centre provided me with the confidence to succeed as an artist and an education that sharpened my appetite to learn more."
