Tennessee senior chosen Volunteer of the Month

RELEASED: Feb. 15, 2007

DANVILLE, KY—Cassie Brownson, a senior from Morristown, Tenn., was chosen as Centre's Volunteer of the Month for February.

Brownson will graduate this spring after a distinguished career as a service leader, particularly in the Bonner Program. Bonner scholars and leaders work to advance the goals of the Bonner Foundation, a national organization that seeks to develop "thoughtful, caring and diverse" student leaders dedicated to community service. During her four years with the program, Brownson has epitomized that commitment to service.

She helped to found the KICS (Kids In Creative Surroundings) after-school program at the Danville Housing Authority. This program, operated in cooperation with the Salvation Army, provides educational enrichment activities for area children. The program has become very successful and serves 15-20 area students each day.

Also as part of her Bonner experience, Brownson spent a portion of last summer in McDowell County, West Virginia, as a facilitator on the Bonner First Year Trip. While in West Virginia, she helped lead her peers through painting and construction projects, as well as helping guide the group so they gained the most from their experience

During her final year in college, Brownson has served as the Bonner Senior Intern, working behind the scenes to coordinate Bonner projects, create a directory of local service agencies, and continue moving the program forward. She has also served as the philanthropy chair for Delta Delta Delta social sorority, organizing service events and motivating others to get involved. During her tenure the sorority raised more than $11,000 for St. Jude’s Hospital, the sorority’s national philanthropy.

Brownson is currently in the application process for Teach For America and will continue to serve others after she graduates.
