Annual golf tournament honors Jim English '64

RELEASED: August 9, 2007

DANVILLE, KYCentre College's annual Fall Golf Classic has been renamed the "Centre College-Jim English Invitational" in honor of alum Jim English '64 (pictured center in sweater). English, who lives in Windermere, Fla., on the Isleworth Golf Club, Florida’s premiere golf course, has entertained Centre's golf teams during winter break for the past two years.

"Jim English has become a fine supporter of our golf programs and is one of the main reasons for our recent surge of improvement within the program," says Brian Chafin, Centre athletic director and coordinator of golf. "Our players look forward to visiting with Jim each year in Florida, playing at Isleworth and taking in all the great sites on the golf course."

"Jim has a deep background in golf—he was Sam Snead's accountant and rubbed elbows with many of the game's greats. He's hosted Michael Jordan and others at his home at Isleworth, as well as being instrumental in starting a Division I tournament at his club," Chafin says.

Centre's men's golf program moved up the Division III ranks last year from 151st to 29th, and the women went from being unranked to being ranked 50th in the nation.
