“Chowan”: New temporary dining facility opens RELEASED: June 26, 2008 The new building will act as the primary campus dining facility during the estimated 12–18 months it will take for Cowan Dining Commons to be removed and replaced with a combination Campus Center and dining hall. After that, the building will function as a multi-purpose facility for large-scale student activities and other campus uses to be determined. “We are excited to see ‘Chowan’ come on line,” said Centre’s president John Roush. “It will be a neat, temporary place for our summer guests and, most importantly, our returning students in the fall. We think we can have some fun – beginning when we let the students name the facility – with Chowan for the next 15 months or so as we prepare to open the College’s new Campus Center, a 40,000+ square foot, state-of-the-art facility that will house Cowan Dining Hall and serve as the campus hub for years to come.” The Communications Office launched the "Name the New Eatery Contest," which gave current students, faculty and staff the opportunity to lay claim to a piece of Centre history. The "winning temporary name" as chosen in three rounds of student voting was Chowan.
