Family Weekend held Sept. 19-20

DANVILLE, KY—Each year the Centre Parents Association welcomes hundreds of visitors to Family Weekend! This special event is a wonderful opportunity for families to experience Centre and to share time with their student. Siblings, grandparents, favorite aunts–all family members–flocked to campus this weekend to participate in the activities.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 19
7 a.m. – 10 p.m.
HALL OF FAME CAFÉ. Sutcliffe, 2nd floor. Stop by for a specialty coffee, a soft drink, muffins, sandwiches and other delicious items.
9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
New Paintings by John Harlan Norris. Aegon Gallery in the Jones Visual Arts Center. John Harlan Norris is a painter and musician currently living in Jonesboro, Ark. He is originally from Kentucky and received a B.A. in studio art and English from Centre in 2000. He earned an M.F.A. in painting and drawing from Louisiana State University in 2005. Since graduating, he has taught drawing and design at LSU, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Southern University. His work has been shown in Chicago and Houston, as well as throughout Louisiana and Kentucky. He currently is teaching as an assistant professor of art at Arkansas State University. Open to the public at no charge.

CENTRE BOOKSTORE. No trip to Centre is complete without a visit to the bookstore, located downtown in the former Hub building—at the corner of Main and Third streets. Enjoy coffee and snacks in the Hub Café, located right next door.

APPOINTMENTS WITH FACULTY AND ADVISORS, ATTEND CLASSES. Faculty and/or advisor appointments are a traditional part of Family Weekend and allow for the opportunity to meet members of the faculty and administration. Please arrange these appointments in advance through students.

DINING AT CHOWAN. Enjoy dinner with students in Chowan, the new temporary dining facility. No reservations necessary; pay at the door.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Weisiger Theatre, Norton Center for the Arts. An 11-member cast will perform in this sophisticated Steve Martin comedy set in 1904 Paris at the Lapin Agile, a Bohemian cabaret gathering of artists, writers and musicians. One evening, young Albert Einstein and young Pablo Picasso meet, and their conflicting ideas on science and art cause them to spark and spar about artistic integrity, probability and lust in a witty anticipation of the 20th century. The show has mature themes and language. Unofficial rating, PG-13. No admission charge.

Mission IMPROVable.Combs Student Activities Center. A five-person improv group, Mission IMPROVable, relies not only on the performers, but also the audience to participate. Mission IMPROVable is the nation's "most touring-est improv group ever!" Since 1998, this band of improv agents has been traveling the country spreading its unique style of improv comedy to everyone they meet. Mission IMPROVable now performs at hundreds of colleges, improv festivals and theatres. No admission charge.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 20

New Paintings by John Harlan Norris. Aegon Gallery in the Jones Visual Arts Center. ACADEMIC SAMPLERS. "Mini-versions" of classroom lectures and sessions on current topics for college parents.

So You Have a "Millennial" in College: Parenting the "Gen Y" Student. Young 101. Family Weekend participants will explore characteristics of the "Millennial Generation," and discuss the applicability of that information to a student's success at Centre. Led by Kathy L. Miles, LMFT, CADC and Centre Director of Counseling Services. Student Scott Meltzer '10 will assist with the presentation. Bon Jour, Buenos Dias, Konichiwa! Crounse 301. Several Centre faculty and students will discuss various travel opportunities for Centre students and will share their experiences. Led by Dr. Milton Reigelman, Cowan Professor of English and Director of International Programs.
10:30 a.m. – Noon
The Economics of Development. Crounse 313. Why are some countries rich and other countries poor? How can economic growth accompany environmental stewardship? During this session Dr. David Anderson, Centre Blazer Professor of Economics, will address timely questions about poverty, wealth and the environment.The Creation Museum Controversy. Crounse 302. In 2007, the Creation Museum opened in Petersburg, Ky. With high quality dioramas, films, a planetarium show and dozens of dinosaurs, the Answers In Genesis ministry set out to make the case for a 6,000-year-old universe. From the beginning, the museum has attracted vocal criticism from various groups. This talk traces the controversy surrounding the museum, outlines the larger sociological questions of why there is a controversy and presents an account of what the museum does and does not say. Led by Dr. William (Beau) Weston, Van Winkle Professor of Sociology.

PRESIDENT'S BRUNCH AT CHOWAN. President John Roush and his wife, Susie, invite students and their families to enjoy brunch in the new Chowan dining facility. No charge, but please make a reservation.
10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
CENTRE BOOKSTORE. Last chance to shop for a Centre souvenir—t-shirts, mugs, hats and other gift items—at the Centre bookstore located downtown at Third and Main streets. Enjoy coffee, pastries and sandwiches in the Hub Café.
9:45 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
TOUR OF CAMPUS. The admission office is hosting tours of the campus for any interested siblings and friends. Meet at Old Centre. The tours are led by Centre students. Reservation required.
11 a.m.
MINI CONCERT. Weisiger Theatre. A popular tradition during Family Weekend—the Centre choral and instrumental ensembles will perform under the direction of the music faculty. No charge.
11:30-1 p.m.
OPEN HOUSE: Career Services. Old Carnegie, first floor. Career Services is pleased to offer an open house for the families of our students! Parents and other family members are invited to stop by Career Services in Old Carnegie to see the facilities, meet the staff, and have some refreshments before attending the game.

CHOWAN FAMILY CELEBRATION & MUSIC BY BILLYBLUES. Bring the whole family to Chowan for food, fun, and music by the legendary group BILLYBLUES. Danville-based band BILLYBLUES has been together 11 years and has four CDs to their credit. From a blues base their music moves between rock, rockabilly and bluegrass, and has been praised for its three part harmonies and clever lyrics. The band also has two popular videos on YouTube, "Every Kind of Fool" and "Junk in the Trunk" and includes two members of the Centre faculty and staff. Reservations needed.
8 p.m.
THE POINTER SISTERS. Norton Center for the Arts. Their first performance in Los Angeles at the Troubadour Club was hailed by critics for its versatility and range, and everyone called The Pointer Sisters "the most exciting thing to hit show business in years." Their 1973 debut album gave us the single, "Yes We Can, Can," which reached #11 on Billboard magazine's pop singles chart and they've been delighting us ever since. NOTE: No guest parking passes are required for Family Weekend. Parents may park in all student and faculty/staff lots. Also, please get a revised Family Weekend schedule when checking in at the Registration because some events may be added for the weekend. Casual and comfortable dress is encouraged for the weekend!
