Homecoming 2008 is this weekend

DANVILLE, KYHomecoming is an annual event that alumni and students alike anticipate eagerly, and Homecoming 2008 is no exception. Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25 will be packed with exciting events.

At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, a special ceremony will mark the designation of the quadrangle bordered by Old Centre, Wiseman Hall, Boles Hall and Maple Avenue as Benefactors Plaza. Included in the Plaza will be the names of all members of Centre's newest donor recognition organization, the Lifetime Giving Society, which recognizes individuals and organizations whose total gifts to the College, whether during their lifetimes or through their estate plans, are equal to or greater than $100,000.

Campus visitors can enjoy an exhibit by artist John Harlan Norris '00 titled Inanimates at the Jones Visual Arts Centre (JVAC). A gallery talk by Norris is scheduled for Friday from 3:30 p.m. – 4 p.m., followed by a reception from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. The JVAC will be open 9 p.m – 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Guided tours of Centre's beautiful new student residence, Pearl Hall, will take place on Saturday from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. The tour is open to members of the public. Located on Main Street, Pearl Hall was built with a gift from Centre trustee Robert Brockman '63 and is named in memory of Brockman's mother and grandmother, both named Pearl. The facility was built using design features that achieve energy conservation and occupant health and are recommended by the U.S. Green Building Council program for The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

At 4 p.m. on Friday, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony in front of Young Hall for Centre's new science building, a two-story, 40,000-square-foot campus facility dedicated to instruction and research in the sciences. In case of rain the ceremony will be moved inside to Young 101.

In addition, Centre's current science building, Young Hall, will be renovated and the two-building complex will house the psychology, psychobiology, biology and biochemistry and molecular biology programs, and will provide space for work in synthetic chemistry, as well.

Alumni are encouraged to stop by the Chenault Alumni House on Friday and Saturday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. for the annual Alumni Reception.

On Friday, the Alumni College invites all back to relive their classroom days from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Young 101. Featured distinguished faculty members will discuss important issues in today's society.

The annual Homecoming 5K Run strikes out at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday starting in front of Young Hall. The entry fee is $15 per runner. Entries will be accepted until 8 a.m. on the day of the race.

The Distinguished and Young Alumnus Award recipients will be presented, along with the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, at the annual Alumni Recognition Ceremony on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Weisiger Theatre at the College's Norton Center for the Arts.

This year’s honorees are: Distinguished Alumnus/a Award: Mark Bridges '88, Jim Hawkins '78, and Susan Weesner West '81. Young Alumna Award: Mary Quinn Kerbaugh Ramer '98Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees: Cheryl Hart '93, Peter Mazzaferro '54, Josh Will '97, and Bo Wyenandt '89.

Alumni are invited to a full buffet lunch inside Charles T. Hazelrigg Gymnasium in Sutcliffe Hall on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Tickets to the Alumni Luncheon are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years old and younger. All are asked to make reservations.

This year's Homecoming Gala will feature The Beach Boys on Friday 8:30 p.m. in Newlin Hall. With more than 100 million albums sold, Billboard magazine named The Beach Boys the No. 1 selling American band of all time. Saturday at 8 p.m., enjoy the music of Nashville artist Matt Wertz and opening act Jeremy Lister on West Walnut Street.

The football team takes on Birmingham-Southern College at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Also on Saturday, women's and men's soccer go up against DePauw University at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

As part of Homecoming 2008 festivities, Centre College will be hosting an alumni book-signing event on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the College's Norton Center for the Arts. One of the featured authors will be Rob Robertson '63 with his just-published book, The Wonder Team: The Story of the Centre College Praying Colonels and Their Rise to the Top of the Football World, 1917-1924 (Butler Press, 2008). The book is the most complete history of Centre football's glory years and contains a number of amazing photos.

As part of The Wonder Team launch, the original fire engine that the famous Praying Colonels football team rode on through Danville after their legendary 1921 defeat of Harvard will be on campus. Click here to read more.
