CentreTerm is the right time for internships

RELEASED: January 17, 2008

DANVILLE, KYCentreTerm, Centre College's unique three-week January term, is designed for highly focused and out-of-the-ordinary classes, field trips and study-abroad opportunities. It's also a time when many students choose to explore their career interests by doing internships.

For Ginny Reynolds, a junior from Greenwood, Va., those interests have taken her to The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in Staunton, Va. This is her second stint in museum work, and she hopes to build on the knowledge she gained doing a paid internship last summer at Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial in Arlington, Va.

"I decided to intern at the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Presidential Library
(WWPL) because it offered me the opportunity to broaden my experiences," Reynolds says. "In previous museum-related internships, I've spent the majority of my time working with textiles. While I'm very interested in textiles, they're fairly specific, and I hoped to gain experience beyond handling, labeling and storing clothing and fabrics.

"Interning at the Presidential Library offered me a chance to develop and expand on my current set of skills and learn more about an important presidential site," she continues.

Internships are an integral part of Centre's mission to provide students with a learning experience that reflects their individual interests and abilities. Internships are also at the heart of The Centre Commitment.

The Commitment guarantees that students who meet the College's academic and social obligation will do an internship, study abroad and graduate in four years or the College will provide up to a year of additional study tuition-free.

And Centre's Career Services office is always eager to help pair students with the right internships.
"Early in the fall (2007) semester, I scheduled an appointment with my career advisor, Joy Asher (associate director of Career Services)," Reynolds says. "She explained the CentreTerm Internship process and told me the important dates I needed to know to turn in forms, etc. She was also very knowledgeable of similar internships and offered to put me in contact with the right people. She was there to answer any questions and offer advice on my cover letters and resume."
