Interest and expertise on issues of hunger and homelessness; former director of Louisville United Against Hunger and a case manager working with homeless men. Travel and study in Bangladesh, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala focused on sustainable development and world hunger. Has guided students to first-hand understanding of homeless shelters. Honored as a teacher and a hunger activist.

A scholar of the Hebrew bible and biblical literature. Expert on ancient languages. Contributing author to Eerdman's Dictionary of the Bible. Served as a scholar-in-residence and guest speaker at Temple Adath Israel in Lexington, giving a series of lectures on topics including wisdom literature of the Bible, the tower of Babel story, and the Book of Job.

Expertise in the history of Christianity and Christian thought, Biblical history and archaeology, and the contemporary Middle East. An avid participant in archaeological digs in Israel, often taking Centre students. He and his students were part of a team that uncovered at Sepphoris rare amulets estimated to be around 2000 years old. Co-editor, along with Douglas R. Edwards, of Archaeology and the Galilee: Text and Context in the Graeco-Roman and Byzantine Periods (Scholars Press, 1997.)
