Scholarly expert on the history of eastern Europe. Author of Kiev: A Portrait 1800-1917, editor of The City in Russian History, and editor of The City in Late Imperial Russia. Guest editor of a special issue of Nationalities Papers on Moldova. Guest lecturer in Kazakstan on American politics and culture during the fall of 1995. Research grants in the Soviet Union (Fulbright and IREX). Has taken Centre students on travel-study programs to Eastern Europe on five occasions.
