Author of Images of Love and Death in Late Medieval and Renaissance Art (University of Michigan Press, 1976). Has taught courses and seminars covering the entire chronology of the Western artistic tradition. Particular expertise in Italian art and architecture from 1100 to 1600. Lived and taught in Italy 1976-81. Returned to Italy 1993-94 and pursued reesearch that led to papers and journal articles on the history and art of Late-Medieval and Early-Renaissance philanthropic institutions in Italy and, more generally, the study of works of art dealing with the concept of charity.
