Centre College Debate News

Fact Sheet #9: Habitat for Humanity -
"The House the Vice Presidents Built"

The Centre College chapter of Habitat for Humanity has received a $15,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati to apply toward construction of a Habitat house in Danville. The campus chapter of Habitat pursued the grant and the house in partnership with the Boyle County Habitat chapter and a number of local banks. Farmers National Bank has served as a leader among the participating financial institutions.

Who?

Centre students Chris DeHoag (Bowling Green), Stacy Bailey (Columbia) and Elam Leed (Friars Hill, W.Va.) took the lead in developing the grant proposal. They received assistance and support from Karl Benson and Martha Farmer of the Boyle County Habitat chapter, as well as Louis Prichard of Farmers National Bank and Centre staff members Ann Young and Rick Axtell.

When?

The two local Habitat chapters will pursue a construction schedule that makes it possible to "raise the roof" on the day the Vice Presidential debate is held on the Centre campus (Oct. 5, 2000). Foundation and preparatory work will begin in late summer.

Where?
The house will be constructed in Danville as close to campus as possible. The two Habitat chapters currently are negotiating on a building lot. How? The Habitat chapters will collaborate with Centre Director of Volunteer Services Ann Young and Centre Chaplain Rick Axtell to recruit students, college employees, local citizens and other interested persons as volunteers.

Other important facts
The Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati is a regional wholesale bank that serves over 750 member financial institutions in Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee, including a number of Danville banks. The FHLB sets aside 10 percent of net earnings each year for two housing programs that seek to make housing affordable for persons with low or moderate income. The $15,000 grant for the Danville house came from these funds via the Affordable Housing Program. A number of Danville banks have agreed to make grants to support the project, along with a Centre parent who is deeply committed to Habitat.
