Fact Sheet #8: Educational Outreach

As Centre College prepares to host the Vice Presidential debate Oct. 5, 2000, the collegeÕs highest priority is to create a learning experience for our students and the community. In that spirit, Centre and a number of local school districts have begun planning debate-related activities.

Here are examples of programs and projects under consideration. Many of these plans remain tentative.

Centre College Classic film series on debate or election themes. ¥ Arthur Schlesinger Jr. to lecture on campus (Sept. 25). ¥ Norton Center for the Arts open for tours of set construction (Oct. 2-4). ¥ On debate day: free seminars on topics related to the election, a dramatic characterization of Frederick Douglass, and enactment of a Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Danville Independent Schools Hogsett Elementary School Student political campaign on theme of "What Can We Do to Make Hogsett Better?" ¥ Jennie Rogers Elementary School Concert of patriotic music, art show of campaign posters. ¥ Toliver Elementary School Invite production crews to have lunch at the elementary school, make giant paper mache elephant and donkey for front lawn. ¥ Bate Middle School Straw poll and mock election, "Get out the Vote" campaign, student-produced public service ads. ¥ Danville High School Interactive museum on front lawn of school: "Americana: A Salute to Uncle Sam."

Boyle County Schools Woodlawn Elementary School Living history display with students role-playing vice presidents, mock candidate debates. ¥ Perryville Elementary Students in authentic costumes demonstrating 19th-century toys and games manufactured by the 1860's Reproductions Company (a student business devised to teach economics, mathematics, marketing and history). ¥ Boyle County Middle School Parade float. ¥ Boyle County High School Register seniors to vote and orient them to voting machines, create mural depicting political images and events.

Kentucky School for the Deaf Leadership training program for deaf and hard-of-hearing high school students. ¥ Tours of deaf education museum housed in Jacobs Hall. ¥ Sponsorship of sign-language interpreters for debate media hall.
