Thursday, October 5, 2000 Centre College, as a liberal arts educational institution, seeks to provide a site on campus for individuals and groups to express their political and social views on the occasion of Centres hosting the Vice Presidential Debate. The site, Speakers Park, will provide a platform with sound amplification equipment, broad access to world and national media, a large-screen television screen for viewing the debate, and restroom and concession facilities. Space is expected to be limited; any groups or individuals wanting to utilize Speakers Park should apply for a permit to reserve site space, platform time, and table space. Recommended deadline for permit applications is 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 1. Other important information is below.
At a news conference on Monday, October 2, Danville Police Chief Larry Downs announced that the City of Danville would permit groups to march on the sidewalks along Main Street on October 5. The proposed route is west on Main Street to Maple Avenue, left onto Maple Avenue, then right onto Walnut, left onto Beatty Avenue, then right onto Russell Street and into Speakers Park. The time frames in which groups can march through the block between Fifth Street and Maple Avenue are 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Groups wishing to march on this route should consult with Chief Downs as to the application process, times and places for staging, and other details. Speakers Park will be located on the south edge of the Centre College campus, behind the baseball field and to the west of the football stadium. Entrance to Speakers Park will be from Russell Street, an east-west street running south of campus and accessible from Beatty Avenue on the west and Fourth Street on the East. All activities covered by this Permit are to take place in Speakers Park.
Speakers Park will be accessible to permittees from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5.
Parking on Oct. 5 will be extremely limited on and around campus. Visitors should plan to park away from campus and walk or take advantage of one of the remote parking lots Centre has arranged, along with shuttle service to campus. One recommended parking space, which is expected to open around 3 p.m. on Oct. 5, is Millennium Park on U.S. business 150 west of Danville.
The platform schedule will be created on a first-come, first-served basis.
