Convocations

All full-time students who are enrolled at Centre for the full academic year are required to earn a total of 12 convocation credits. To receive convocation credit, students must have their ID card swiped, be seated before the program begins, remain present throughout the full program, and swipe their own ID card immediately following the event. For the entire convocation policy, refer to the Student Handbook. For up-to-date changes in the Convocation Calendar please see Notesworthy on-line. Vishakha N. Desai, former curator at The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and current president/CEO of Asia Society. Prior to joining the Asia Society in 1990, Dr. Desai taught at the University of Massachusetts, Boston University, Columbia University, and Williams College.

Jim Lucas brings to life the words, background, and experiences of Dr. King in his one-man show, “Reflections”. His renditions of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream”, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”, and “A Knock at Midnight”, should not be missed.

Darius Rejali, Professor of Politics at Reed College, will discuss the moral and practical issues surrounding the use of torture in democracy.

1,000,000 People in the Bluegrass
Helm Roberts will share an urban planner’s/architect’s perspective on how 1 million people can live comfortably in Central KY while preserving the farmland that makes the region unique.

March 27, 7 p.m., Young 101
The Art of Chess: Grandmaster Gregory Kaidanov
Gregory Kaidanov of Lexington, former US champion (1992) and one of the top 100 chess players in the world, will give a 30 minute talk on learning to play chess and growing up in the Soviet Union, the development of his career, and how he came to settle in KY. He will demonstrate chess games, and play blindfolded the student winner of a previous chess tournament at Centre.

Naming the Real: The Void, the Open, the Good, and God
David Tracy is one of the most recognized figures in contemporary theology and philosophy of religion. In this address Tracy explores the multiple names that have been assigned to ultimate reality-- what Christianity calls "God"--across diverse historical and cultural situations.

This film won awards at the Sundance Film Festival for showing international trade issues involved with how coffee beans travel from the producers to the consumers, the fair trade system, and what globalization means to farmers in Ethiopia.
