Hoffman and Owens named SAA Coaches of the Year

Two Centre coaches recently received the highest honors in their respective sports from the Southern Athletic Assocation (SAA).
Lisa Owens, head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track teams, was named Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Jay Hoffman, head coach of the women’s soccer team, was named Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year. Owens and Hoffman are the first coaches to ever be given these honors, as the SAA is currently in its inaugural season.
Under Owens, the men’s cross country team won the inaugural SAA Men’s Cross Country championship earlier this year. Owens was named Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association (KTCCCA) College Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2011. She was named South/Southeast Regional Coach of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2008.
Hoffman, a 1996 Centre alumnus, led the women’s soccer team to one of the most successful seasons in its history this year. The team achieved an overall record of 20-2, setting a College record for most wins in a season. The Colonels finished 6-1 in the SAA, winning the SAA championship tournament and becoming co-champions of the regular season. This marks the second year in a row the women’s soccer team has made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, as well as the second straight year the team has advanced to the second round.
