Both Centre soccer teams receive NCAA Tournament bids

The Centre men’s and women’s soccer teams both learned on Monday that they received at-large bids to their respective NCAA Tournaments. The men will take on defending national champion Ohio Wesleyan on Friday in Wheaton, Ill., while the women will host Agnes Scott on Saturday.
Though the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) was without an automatic bid in its first season of competition, both teams earned their way into the field with strong seasons. The men posted a record of 14-3-3, tied for the regular season SAA championship and advanced to the conference championship game where they fell to Berry on penalty kicks. The women posted the best record in school history at 19-1, tied for the regular season conference championship and won the first SAA Tournament.
The men’s team will be making its first tournament appearance since 1999 and will open play against Ohio Wesleyan, which earned an at-large bid after posting a 13-2-5 record this season. OWU is ranked 19th in the latest NSCAA Poll, 21st in the latest Poll and is making its 35th tournament appearance. The winner between Centre and Ohio Wesleyan will take on the winner of Wheaton (15-3-3) and Transylvania (16-1-2) on Saturday.
The Centre women are in the tournament for the second straight year and will be hosting for the first time when they face Agnes Scott at 5 p.m. Saturday. Agnes Scott is a first time NCAA Tournament participant after posting a 10-9-1 record and earning an automatic bid after winning the Great South Tournament. Also playing at Centre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will be Emory (11-1-6) and DePauw (7-10-1). The Centre women have a history with both teams, having been a former Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference member with DePauw and having been eliminated from last year’s NCAA Tournament by Emory. The winners of Saturday’s games will meet Sunday at 5 p.m.
