Centre College hosts Summer Internship Showcase

Centre interns showcase their summer work

Internship Fair 2015Long regarded as a place of access and opportunity, Centre College continued its commitment to career preparation by recently hosting the Summer Internship Showcase at the Norton Center for the Arts. Over 60 students participated, which allowed them to not only present their summer work through a visual presentation but also meditate on their experiences.
“The biggest advantage of this event for the students is that it gives them the chance to both reflect on what they’ve learned during their summer internship as well as practice their presentation skills,” Joy Asher, director of the Center for Career & Professional Development, explains.
The Centre Commitment guarantees an internship or research opportunity to all students, and it’s no surprise that 90 percent of Centre students engage in such experiences at home and abroad. In fact, this summer interns received a record amount of funding totaling $160,000 to study in 13 states and 11 foreign countries.
Among the large group of students presenting at the showcase, Chandler Garland ’17 was eager to present her internship at Danville’s hometown newspaper The Advocate-Messenger. She often met with Assistant Director of the Center for Career & Professional Development Mindy Wilson to edit her resume and hone her interview skills prior to applying to the newspaper through the Kentucky Press Association.
Garland wrote over twenty articles for The Advocate-Messenger throughout the summer and largely credits her Centre classes with preparing her for this internship experience.
“They’ve certainly taught me how to write,” she says. “Specifically for a newspaper, it gave me the skills to evaluate the stories I was writing, to know what questions to ask during an interview and then to synthesize all of that information into a coherent story to which others could relate.”
Several tables down from Garland, Aubrey Russak-Pribble ’16 gave a presentation on her bioarchaeology internship with MOCHE, Inc., in Peru. She first discovered the internship while in one of Associate Professor of Anthropology Robyn Cutright’s classes last year.
“I had never looked into bioarchaeology before until I was in class with Dr. Cutright,” Russak-Pribble explains. “She had been passing on information about internship opportunities to the class, and I thought this one would be interesting.”
Russak-Pribble was one of the students chosen to receive funding during the summer, and says the College made the dream of this internship a reality for her.
“All of this was because of Centre,” she says. “I would have never known this opportunity existed, and I would not have been able to participate in this opportunity.”
