Centre College undertakes campus wide lighting retrofit to reduce carbon footprint

A new partnership between Centre College and Nashville-based Tenzing Energy Solutions will retrofit the majority of campus buildings with more efficient and safer lighting, achieving significant emissions reductions and cost savings estimated in excess of $1 million over the next five years.

In making the conversion to LED lighting, Centre will realize continued savings well into the future.

The project is part of Centre’s new Campus Master Plan, which included a campuswide energy assessment, and aligns with the College’s longtime association with the 2006 American College & University President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

Already underway, project completion is scheduled for November 2019.

Tenzing will also work with Centre to create an energy dashboard, installing systems powered by Autani that monitor energy consumption. In addition, Centre will have the ability to pull custom energy reports to map energy consumption by location and time.

Wayne King, Centre’s longtime director of facilities management, is particularly pleased that this will allow him to compare multiple data sets for year-over-year performance.

“As a campus now celebrating its bicentennial, the physical plant includes a mixture of old buildings as well as new,” King said. “That means we have nearly 20 structures on the National Historic Register and others that have been built to achieve LEED certification.”

Along with lighting, King noted that networked thermostatic control will now be an option.

“Since older lighting emits heat, our costs will also be reduced in part by using a more efficient and complete LED solution,” he added.

Safety has also been an important factor in the equation.

“A consistent and very important concern we heard as part of our Campus Master Plan town hall meetings across campus addressed exterior lighting,” said Brian Hutzley, Centre’s CFO.

The solution has been fixtures that provide better lighting, are more durable and also able to withstand extreme temperatures and weather.

According to David Dean, managing director of Tenzing Energy Solutions, the project’s success involved “Tenzing’s engineering and design teams working in collaboration with Centre to design a customized solution for the campus.”

First-year savings are estimated at nearly $250,00. Within a decade, Centre should be able to point to avoided costs of nearly $2.5 million.

As part of a continuing effort to work with area businesses whenever possible, the installation efforts will be handled by Wiley Electric, based in nearby Stanford.
