Cyrus Dutton ’19 has been given several opportunities to network with a number of politicians in Kentucky as the chair of the Centre College Republicans. Those opportunities took him a step further this summer while he worked as an intern with the Republican National Committee (RNC) in Washington, D.C. with the finance division raising money for the party.
Dutton explained how there are two sides of the finance division, low donor and high donor, the latter being the area where he worked.
“High donor finance requires that each donor is well taken care of and whatever concerns they may have are addressed,” Dutton said.
“In my position, I researched our donors to make sure that we had all the information we needed to address their concerns and make each experience personal,” he continued. “I also made phone calls to invite donors to certain events that the RNC hosts for high to mid-level donors.”
Dutton added how this internship at RNC is the top political internship for a young college Republican, besides the White House internship that is dependent on each administration.
Working with the Republican party is something Dutton has had experience in for several years, as he worked with them in high school and assisted with multiple campaigns.
“I was placed in finance due to my previous summer job in Alaska at Riversong Lodge,” Dutton said. “I started as a dishwasher at the fishing lodge, working my way to the position of general manager in three months.
“I took care of the books for the lodge, giving me financial experience,” he continued. “The only catch is, the RNC finance division has nothing to do with accounting.”
Dutton believes this internship is his first real stepping stone into the world of politics. Having gained valuable experience he can build upon to one day make his way into the White House.
