Centre students display art exhibit “When Abroad,” Nov. 12-Dec. 7

Centre College students Vân Đặng ‘19, Sara Dewitt ‘19, and Muzi Yan ‘19 will display an exhibit titled “When Abroad” in the AEGON Gallery in the Jones Visual Arts Center, Nov. 12 through Dec. 7. A reception will be held on Nov. 16 from 4:30-6 p.m.

“When Abroad” is an art installation that explores the complexity of the experiences of international students on Centre’s campus. The exhibit simulates the journey of international students as they deal with difficult problems of identity conflict, cultural shock and assimilation.

The installation is the culmination of the student exhibitors’ Creative Thinking Immersion Program research project this past summer. They interviewed international students about their experiences at Centre and used the responses to synthesize an art installation exhibit to bring their stories to a wider audience.

The art includes a combination of audio-visual installation, photography and interactive sculptures.
