Centre to host American Shakespeare Center performances, Nov. 1-2

The American Shakespeare Center (ASC) on Tour will perform Sophocles’ “Antigone” on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Newlin Hall in Centre College’s Norton Center for the Arts. This performance will be a convocation credit for students and is an open event to the Centre community.

The company will also perform Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” on Friday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. in Newlin Hall. This is a ticketed event in the Norton Center subscription series, as well as a convocation for Centre students.

Headquartered in Staunton, Virginia, ASC is one of the leading Shakespeare repertory companies in this country. Founded in 1988 by Ralph Cohen, a leading scholar of Shakespeare performance, the company is dedicated to offering lively and interactive productions of Shakespeare’s plays, two of which they have previously performed at Centre.

Thursday’s performance will serve as the final event for Centre’s Building Bridges and Community Day. Sophocles’ masterpiece engages the tensions within the typical community: between the needs of the individual and the state, the claims of religion and politics, and between competing models of gender, making it an appropriate event to complete a day dedicated to community building and understanding.

“The Comedy of Errors” is one of Shakespeare’s most audience-friendly and comedic works, perfectly suitable for any fan of live theater.

In conjunction with the productions, ASC on Tour will also offer a series of campus workshops and classroom visits on the afternoon of Oct. 31 to engage students and give them an opportunity to interact with the performers.
