Centre’s Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity raises $3,000 for Heart of Kentucky United Way

Centre College’s Delta Kappa Epsilon (DEKE) recently presented the Heart of Kentucky United Way (HKUW) a check totaling $3,000 after their annual favors auction event. HKUW is a nonprofit organization focused on making a lasting impact on education, income and health in the community by supporting more than 60 programs in Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer counties.

“The DEKE favors auction is an event in which brothers provide tangible items or favors such as experiences like touring the state parks of Kentucky, tutoring before finals or giving lacrosse lessons,” said Evan Thompson ’21. “We also reach out to both regional and local businesses about donating items. These items or favors then are auctioned off with all of the winnings going toward helping the HKUW.”

The favors auction is an essential event that provides an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to donate toward an organization that gives back to the local community.

“What really makes our philanthropy important to us is that we can see the results within the community,” he said, “whether it is the Getting Ahead program that assists in financial planning or the Mercer Transformation program that focuses on assisting students who may be facing challenges in both the classroom and at home.”

In addition, Thompson said the event also allows for the DEKE brotherhood to give back to the community, with every member contributing an item or a favor to the general public.

“What was remarkable was that, of the 80 items available, every single item was bid on,” he added. “Whether it was tickets to a local distillery or peer tutoring before finals, our chapter banded together and used this event as a way to give back to the community while having fun in the process.”
