Centre’s chemistry program is designed for students preparing for grad school in chemistry or a related field, those preparing for med school or other health profession, and students seeking a strong analytical and technical background for employment in a variety of fields including the pharmaceutical industry.

entre’s chemistry program seeks to provide students with an understanding of chemical principles that enable them to solve routine or unusual problems in the areas of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Students also gain basic laboratory skills and the ability to select and utilize appropriate instrumentation to solve specified investigative problems. Students are expected to demonstrate skill at analyzing and communicating scientific concepts and experimental results as well as designing and conducting original investigations in chemistry.

The chemistry program offers three degree options: (1) the basic chemistry major, (2) the major with American Chemical Society certification, and (3) the major with emphasis in biochemistry and the American Chemical Society certification. Possession of an ACS-certified degree means that upon graduation the student is immediately eligible for membership in the American Chemical Society. Those pursuing the ACS-certified degrees are strongly encouraged to carry out independent research under the direction of chemistry faculty (CHE 405).

“Centre’s chemistry professors are overwhelmingly knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and eager to help students learn. Students are constantly being challenged to expand the limits of their understanding to novel, real-world problems and applications.”

Centre Class of 2016 • Chemistry Major

The Curriculum

Three chemistry degree options are available at Centre. In addition to the basic chemistry major, two additional options are certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS): a degree with emphasis in chemistry, and one with emphasis in biochemistry. Each requires additional courses and collaborative research to reach a specified total of lecture and laboratory hours. Students completing these degrees are eligible for membership in the ACS immediately upon graduation.

Research & Internships

The chemistry faculty believe that a student’s education is strengthened by involvement in open-ended, independent learning experiences. For that reason, we encourage our chemistry majors to become involved in collaborative research projects with our faculty. These research projects are sometimes performed during the school year (for academic credit) or during the summer (with a stipend and housing allowance). Students present the results of their work at scientific meetings and contribute to publications in scientific journals.

Many students major in chemistry as preparation for careers in research, medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy. Our course offerings at the advanced level offer plenty of flexibility for students to tailor their course selections in those directions. Chemistry graduates pursue careers in engineering, healthcare, law (environmental or patent), teaching, technical sales, and industry (including food, paper, power). Many of our students have gone onto to graduate schools including Caltech, Duke, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and USC.
