Senior Chrys Jones wins second-straight triple jump indoor national championship

Chrys Jones ’11, of Harrodsburg, Ky., won his second-consecutive national championship in the triple jump at the 2011 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, which took place March 11-12 at Capital University in Bexley, Ohio. This marks Jones’ fourth national championship, a record for any Centre student-athlete. Jones is the only Centre student-athlete to hold a national championship: two in indoor triple jump and two in outdoor triple jump.
Jones went into the event ranked No. 1 in the nation and set a new Capital Center Track record with a jump of 49’8.50″. The previous record was held by Joshua Woods of Capital University who had jumped 47’0.25″.
“Going in I knew I was ranked number one which was better than last year,” Jones said. “I had hoped to set a new NCAA record, but I was still extremely pleased with the outcome of winning my fourth national championship.
“The success that I had throughout this indoor season will help me tremendously heading into the outdoor season. Knowing that I have set such high marks will allow me to push myself harder during the outdoor season.
“I’m very thankful to God for all that he has done for me, without him I wouldn’t be able to compete,” Jones said.
Earlier this week, Jones was named the 2010-11 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South/Southeast Region Male Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the South/Southeast Regional Track & Field Coaches.
“I’m very proud of Chrys’ performance. Most people only dream about four titles, and he’s made it a reality,” said Centre Head Coach Lisa Owens. “He’s a blessing to work with, and he has a great work ethic and brings a great attitude to practice every day.”
The Colonels will open the outdoor season on Saturday, March 19 at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.
