Spring semester marked by record number of academic-credit internships

internAcademic internships have quickly become a mainstay of the educational experience at Centre College, due in large part to the success of the Centre Commitment, which guarantees all students an internship or research opportunity, as well as study abroad and graduation in four years.
This past CentreTerm, 55 students completed internships in locations around the globe, including Beijing, China; Merida, Mexico; Washington, D.C.; Albania; the Dominican Republic; Chicago; New Orleans; Boston; and Tampa, Fla. From increasing healthcare access for the homeless to shadowing veterinarians to assisting artists in a hot glass studio, students gained invaluable hands-on experience in a wide variety of fields.
The internship momentum has continued into the spring, with 49 students participating in a total of 50 internships for academic credit, a record number for the spring and fall terms.
According to Mindy Wilson, assistant director of the Center for Career & Professional Development, academic internships offer the best of both worlds.
“An academic-credit internship combines a work component with a substantive academic component, tying practice and theory together,” she explains. “They not only appear on a student’s transcript for future applications to jobs and graduate school but they also foster a deeper learning experience for the student.  A student is able to work in a particular field while working with a faculty mentor to learn what the literature says about that field.”
A special web story series featuring unique student internship experiences will commemorate this record-breaking semester of academic internships.
