BIOGRAPHY

John Ward is vice president emeritus and professor emeritus of English. Ward retired in 2006 after 16 years at Centre. He previously had taught at Kenyon College for 20 years, where he chaired the English department. He twice served as director of the Kenyon-Exeter program and each time was a visiting lecturer at the University of Exeter. Ward taught and wrote about poetry, literary biography, and literary criticism.

As Centre's vice president for academic affairs, Ward was an active leader in issues that affect the quality of educational experience available to Centre students. He encouraged expansion of options for overseas study options, worked to clarify state regulations for teacher education programs, and pursued better understanding of factors affecting student retention.

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS AND MEMBERSHIPS

He took an active role in professional development on a regional and national level, serving as president of the Midwest Modern Language Association. He also was assistant editor of the Kenyon Review and a reader for the Journal of the Midwest Modern Language Association.
