Math Placement Test

Students take at least one math course while at Centre as part of our General Education curriculum. The following math placement tests are designed to help us place you in the appropriate level of math when you choose to take a math course. You do not have to take a math course in your first term at Centre, but it is good for you to know what math course is best for you to take when the time comes.

Your placement in a particular math course has nothing to do with your success at Centre. Simply do your best, but without any
assistance.

Things to Know:

  1. All students take the pre-calculus test. This test usually takes about 30 minutes to complete.
  2. Take the calculus placement test ONLY IF you had a calculus class in high school. This test usually takes about 15 minutes to complete.

Math Test Instructions:

  • You may use a pencil and blank paper to work problems.
  • Do not use calculators or any other aids such as textbooks, formulas, or other types of notes.
  • There are no penalties for wrong answers.
  • The pre-calculus test is designed to be completed in 30 minutes and the short calculus test is designed to be completed in 15 minutes.
  • You will receive your math placement via email on June 16th. Please check your Centre email in June for this and other important information regarding course registration.

Second Language Placement Test

Centre College has a second language requirement as part of our General Education curriculum. You may wish to continue learning a language with which you have previous experience. If that is the case, taking a placement test in that language will help you take an appropriate class for your ability. Accurate placement in your second language means less stress for you when you choose to take your language course. You do not have to take a language course in your first term at Centre, but it is good for you to know the language course best for you to take when the time comes.

Your placement in a particular language course has nothing to do with your success at Centre. Simply do your best, but without any assistance—no help from others, no use of dictionaries or online translators, and no use of any spell-checking or grammar-checking websites.

Results and Course Placement

You will receive your course placement in mathematics and second language in mid-June via an email message from the Registrar’s Office.

Around the same time, you will also receive detailed information about courses available to you for fall term along with suggestions for how to select your fall term courses and detailed, step-by-step instructions for how to register for your courses. You will be assigned a specific date and time to register for courses. Remember, you have an opportunity, if you choose, to speak directly with a faculty advisor during Advising Call-In before selecting your courses. Your fall class schedule will be made available to you in late-July. You will have an opportunity to make changes to your course schedule after talking with your academic advisor in August.

For online course registration for new students, refer to the Summer Tasks Timeline chart for the opening and closing dates.
