Centre College honors faculty and staff during award ceremony

Centre College honored members of its campus community on May 11 at a reception recognizing this year’s faculty and staff award winners. 

Rick Campbell, Takia Salyers and Durand Lay each received the Horky Service Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement by facilities management employees. The award was created from a bequest by Lorette and John Horky ’32 and has been given annually since 1990.  

In addition, Pam Baughman, associate dean and director of admission; Candace Wentz, associate director, instructional technology and design coordinator of the Center for Teaching & Learning; and Karen Ryan, assistant director of center for global citizenship, were recognized for their exemplary service and dedication over the last year. 

While not part of the ceremony, five professors were named Centre Scholars: Sarah Murray, associate professor of education; Daniel Scott, assistant professor of chemistry; Mark Galatowitsch, associate professor of biology; Amy Frederick, assistant professor of art history; and Laura Chinchilla, associate professor of Spanish. 

The Centre Scholar award was endowed by David Grissom, trustee emeritus and past chairman of the Centre Board of Trustees, recognizing excellence in teaching, scholarly work and contributions to the College community. 

Ellen Prusinski, assistant professor of education, Chantell Limerick, assistant professor of Spanish and Leonard Demoranville, associate professor of chemistry received Kirk Awards for excellence in teaching.   

The Kirk Award, endowed by a 1995 gift from Mike and Joanne Kirk Duncan ’71, has been awarded annually since 1996.  

The Presidential Award for Excellence was received this year by Rick Axtell, H. W. Stodghill, Jr. and Adele H. Stodghill Professor of Religion and college chaplain. 

Created in 1999, the award honors individuals who have shown exceptional dedication to the College through their work and service. The award is not given annually, but instead, reserved for occasions when individuals have gone above and beyond to positively transform the campus.
