Biography
Christina Garcia joined the Centre College faculty in 2018. She is assistant professor of Biology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Before coming to Centre, she was a Postdoctoral Teaching Scholar in the Biotechnology Program at North Carolina State University and a postdoctoral researcher at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Nutrition.
Her primary research interest is in the genetic and epigenetic regulation of development in plant and animal model systems; however, her current research focuses on integrating novel molecular biotechnology techniques into laboratory coursework and designing course-based research experiences for students. Some of these projects include metagenomic analysis of sourdough starter cultures and the design, characterization, and assembly of genetic “parts” for synthetic biology.
At Centre, Garcia teaches introductory genetics and biochemistry and molecular biology, and upper-level courses in molecular genetics and cancer biology.
Garcia received a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Centre in 2005 and a PhD from Vanderbilt University in the Department of Cancer Biology in 2011.
