BIOGRAPHY
Jane Joyce retired in 2012 as Luellen Professor Emerita of Classics. She joined Centre’s faculty in 1978.
COURSES TAUGHT
A classical scholar with wide-ranging interests, Joyce regularly taught classes in Latin language and literature, ancient epic and lyric poetry, Greco-Roman drama, classical mythology, and creative writing.
PUBLICATIONS
Her translation of Lucan’s Pharsalia was published by Cornell University Press (1993), and she has translated Catullus’ lyrics for a collection of Latin literature. Joyce is the author of Beyond the Blue Mountains, a narrative sequence of poems that has been presented several times at Centre in a readers’ theatre. She also has published The Quilt Poems (Mill Springs Press, 1984 and 1986, and Gnomon Press, 1991). Her translation and commentary on Statius’ epic, Thebaid—A Song of Thebes, was published by Cornell University Press in 2008.
AWARDS
She played a key role in establishing Centre’s major in the classics and has played a leadership role in the college’s humanities program. Joyce has been honored at Centre with the designation as a Distinguished Professor of Humanities.
