BIOGRAPHY

Marc Démont is a professor of French and Linguistics whose research weaves together French philosophy and literature, film studies, queer studies, and the critical study of education abroad. Building on years of directing study abroad programs in France and the wider Mediterranean—most notably in Sardinia—he proposes an experiential model that is locally attentive, sustainable, and co-creative, asking students to learn with places rather than merely about them. His courses pair close reading and critical literature, with field-based observation, guiding students to experiment with new modes of attention that deepen intercultural understanding. Current projects include a book that articulates the theoretical underpinnings of contemplative, critical study abroad and a set of applied resources for designing courses that bridge scholarship and lived experience.

RESEARCH

Démont research interests include contemporary French philosophy, film studies, queer studies, feminist theories and methodologies, and masculinity studies.
