Summer Health Immersion Program

Incoming first-year students interested in a career in healthcare, experience life on campus—inside and outside of the classroom.

Coming July 2024

The Summer Health Immersion Program (SHIP) is a one-week summer enrichment program for incoming first-year students from Kentucky who are interested in health professions. SHIP students will come to campus to get a head start on exploring their career interests in the healthcare field while also developing essential skills that will help them be successful during their first semester classes at Centre.

What You’ll Do

  • Learn about the pre-health advising process at Centre, including meetings with faculty advisors
  • Meet alumni and health professionals from the local community
  • Practice essential math and science skills for success in chemistry and other introductory pre-health STEM course
  • Engage in a team-based scientific research project led by Centre faculty
The Summer Health Immersion Program 2023 met at Centre College's Olin Hall to help prepare students interested in STEM for college.

Exploring Pre-Health Studies

Last year's program was a rousing success. First year students were able to come early and set the stage for what would lay ahead in their college career. Click through to read about the highlights.

Program Details

Participation in the program is free and open to incoming Centre students who are Kentucky residents with interest in any health profession, including but not limited to medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, or veterinary science. Participants will live in campus housing overseen by student resident assistants and all meals are provided. Mileage to and from Danville will be reimbursed. The number of spaces is limited.

Registration

Invitations to register for the program will be sent by email in late May and early June to Kentucky residents who listed an interest in pre-health professions on application materials. For additional questions email Kari Young.

Schedule

Summer 2024 dates are coming soon. The week will introduce you to Centre, essential skill building, and health profession options. You’ll meet pre-health advisors and current students, hear from healthcare professionals, participate in a research project, and have free time for activities on and around campus.

What Participants Say About the Program

“I would definitely recommend SHIP to other students because it gives them a good first look at college and much more insight about pre-health programs. It made me feel more comfortable with living on campus and confident in my academic ability. It also gives you a close relationship with some of the chemistry professors.”
–Carson Jenkins, ‘26, pre-pharmacy

“Because of this program, I am going into college knowing people in pre-health along with professors and advisors”
–Olivia Overmohle, ‘26, pre-medicine
