Attending Convocations
Convocations happen all year long at Centre College. Some professors assign them as part of their curriculum, but otherwise they are a rich source for information and an entertaining way to get an "A".
Tips for Attending
- Plan your convocation schedule at the beginning of term when the calendar goes out.
- Event details change, so be sure to check our Instagram page for the most up-to-date information.
- Arrive early to secure your seat.
- Look for a green background after you have been scanned in. A red background means an invalid scan.
- Scanning stops once the event begins
- Contact Katie Murphy if you fail to get a credit, and remember faculty/staff verification is needed after an event has occurred.
What is expected of me at a Convocation?
- Be respectful of the presenter.
- Please keep books, computers, and cell phones put away during a presentation.
- Swipe for yourself. Swiping for others not in attendance will result in loss of credit.
- Enjoy the new knowledge you will walk away with.
How do I get credit for attending a Convocation?
To receive a Convocation credit:
- Scan your Centre College ID card at the Convo scanning station.
- Be seated before the program begins.
- Stay for the entire program.
- Scan your Centre College ID card as you exit.
- Convocations are normally one credit. Special events designated as campus-wide convocations are worth two credits. For instance, Opening and Honors convocations are worth 2 credits.
- Participating onstage or working backstage at an event can receive convocation credit. Your supervisor will supply a list of workers to Convocation Manager, Katie Murphy
Convocation credit trouble shooting:
- Student ID cards may need to be replaced in the Student Life Office if the card does not register in the computer system.
- If you arrive late or leave early, you will not receive credit for the event
- Scan only your ID. It is forbidden to scan for somebody else
Can I get convo credit while studying abroad?
Participating in Centre sponsored off-campus study programs receive convocation credit as follows:
- Fall term: 6 credits
- CentreTerm: 1 credit
- Spring Term: 6 credits
If you participate in off-campus internships or non-Centre study abroad programs you may petition the Convocation Committee for convocation credit. The Convocation Committee will consider such requests on a case-by-case basis.
What is the academic policy on Convocations?
- All full-time students who attend Centre for the entire academic year can earn a total of 12 convocation credits.
- Students who fulfill the requirement have one hour of "A" figured into their grade point average and noted on their transcript.
- Some faculty may assign convocations as part of their curriculum, but otherwise they are not required.
- If you are not enrolled on a full-time basis for the full academic year, you still may complete the requirement by accumulating 12 credits.
- You may submit a written appeal to the Convocation Committee Chair if extenuating circumstances affect your ability to complete 12 credits required for the "A". This appeal must be submitted by the last day of classes, to allow time for consideration before final grades are due.
- You are required to follow the letter of the policy and be very fastidious about monitoring convocation credit.
- Convocation credits are not credit hours and do not count toward the 110 credit hours necessary for graduation.
