Álvaro Alcántara López is an investigator at INAH Veracruz (The National Institute for Anthropology and History) in Mexico who specializes in racial identity in the colonial period, in particular the role of militias populated by people of color. His tale "African Heritage in Mexico: Identity and Sociopolitical Recognition" will include a history of the presence of Afro-Mexicans and detail their fight for societal and governmental recognition. This talk is part of the the larger Afro-Mexican Visiting Speaker Series.
