Global warming is the result of burning fossil fuels over the past 150 years and the future of human civilization may depend on our ability to find sustainable alternatives with a zero-carbon footprint. Using nuclear fusion to generate electricity was thought to be a solution that would take a century or more to realize. However, recent technological advances may be able to achieve fusion energy much sooner. Former Centre Physics major Grant Giesbrecht has worked as a professional scientist in a national lab and is currently pursuing a PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. He has worked on plasma systems and will discuss the near future possibilities of using plasma fusion to create electrical energy. Grant will also briefly discuss his trajectory after graduating from Centre College including how Centre College prepared him for graduate school.
