In recent years, calls for reforming the Supreme Court have gained considerable attention. Presidential candidates have called for reform; members of Congress and activists have called for expanding the size of the Court; scholars have argued for democratizing the Court by limiting its power. Professor Ganesh Sitaraman has written some of the leading articles analyzing Supreme Court reform (along with his coauthor Dan Epps). A Professor of Law at Vanderbilt Law School, he teaches and writes about constitutional law, regulation, economic policy, and democracy. He will speak about why proponents think reform is necessary and discuss the pros, cons, and viability of proposed reforms. Sitaraman's books include The Great Democracy: How to Fix Our Politics, Unrig the Economy, and Unite America (2019) and The Crisis of the Middle-Class Constitution (2017). He is a public member of the Administrative Conference of the United States and was a longtime advisor to Elizabeth Warren.
Content Advisory: The convocation will consider recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, likely including the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which held that the Constitution of the United States does not confer a right to abortion. The discussion may be distressing for some. This advisory is provided to foster an informed decision and is not intended to discourage attendance.
