The Barbie movie, Beyonce’s Renaissance tour, Taylor Swift’s Eras tour, and the FIFA Women's World Cup are cultural and commercial phenomena. The movie has already exceeded $1 billion in global ticket sales; market forecasters expect each concert to top $1 billion in sales. The FIFA Women's World Cup ticket sales reached nearly 1.6 million. Some observers are surprised by the disposable income of Millennial and Gen Z women, while others take for granted this gendered spend on a gendered experience. Katherine C. Sredl, Ph.D., Centre '95, will examine the historical context, business, social media, and assumptions about gender and money that can help us unfold the dynamics of Summer '23: a gendered summer of pop culture and marketing fun.
