Humana Lecture: On Belonging and Identity: The Case of a Mixed Black Transracial Adoptee

Young 113

In this convocation, writer and professor Shannon Gibney will examine the relationship between belonging and identity, through the lens of her short story “Oreo,” about a mixed Black transracial adoptee who wants nothing more than to be accepted by the Black kids at her high school. “Oreo” is part of the groundbreaking new anthology, When We Become Ours: A YA Adoptee Anthology (HarperTeen, 2023), which Gibney co-edited with Nicole Chung. Gibney is a faculty member in English at Minneapolis College, and author of several award-winning novels.
