Michael Hughes is a leading change-maker in the local community. His work in the DBCAAHS and as a performer of Motown/Soul music has been essential to uplifting the Black community in Danville that is so marginalized (and often because of the expansion of Centre College). A blurb from Michael: “Music was always at the forefront of the Boyle County African American community. The clubs, dance halls, and restaurants along Second Street, were known for their music.” This convocation is not only a way for students to engage with a community member through experiential learning but a necessary celebration of a culture that Centre has a dark history of marginalizing. The Convocation will happen during Black History Month, a prime opportunity for student engagement, exposure, and celebration of the Black community in Danville. This convocation also raises awareness for a fundraiser for the DBCAAHS occurring the same night organized by the joint effort of the ODI, IFC, and BSO.
Content Advisory: This convocation will have a live band performance, those with audio sensitivities should know if they choose to withhold their attendance. This advisory is provided to foster an informed decision and is not intended to discourage attendance.
