John R. Farris of Lexington, Ky., has been selected to serve as interim vice president for investments and chief financial officer at Centre College. His appointment is effective Feb. 1, 2016.
img14Centre President John A. Roush is delighted to welcome Farris back to his alma mater as a member of the senior administration.
“John Farris will strengthen the College’s effort in finance and investments at a very important time,” Roush said.
“His background and expertise will definitely help make Centre’s future brighter yet,” Roush added. “He combines financial competence at a national level, along with a deep understanding of Kentucky and the region. We are fortunate to have him back among us.”
After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Centre in 1995 with majors in economics and philosophy, Farris continued his studies in economics and finance at Princeton University, where he earned a Master’s in Public Administration.
Besides his impressive educational background, Farris brings to his new role an extensive and wide-ranging record of professional experience in both the public and private sectors.
Brian Hutzley joined Centre College in 2016. A Michigan native with a B.S. in accounting from Michigan State University and an M.B.A. from Syracuse University, Hutzley served most recently as vice president for finance and administration at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. He has an impressive 30-year record of service in both the private and not-for-profit sectors, including key leadership roles at public and private universities.
Before Colgate, Hutzley served as vice chancellor and CFO for the State University of New York (SUNY), which includes 64 campuses and is the country’s largest public higher education system. Hutzley was responsible for overseeing the $12 billion annual operating budget, along with relevant finance and budget areas in addition to financial aid and information technology.
He came to oversee the entire system after six years as vice president for business and finance at SUNY’s Delhi campus, where he managed an annual budget of $80 million.
Prior to his career in higher education, Hutzley spent some two decades in the private sector, ending that part of his career as director of financial planning and analysis for Mead/AT-A-GLANCE, in charge of a $1.2 billion annual budget.
Owens is be responsible for overseeing and leading all accounting functions and Finance Office operations at the College. Scott has been involved in almost every aspect of the business operations of the College at some point in time. Scott has the technical skill to perform the tasks of Controller and, just as importantly, is known and trusted by all segments of our College community. He reports to Bob Keasler, Vice President for Finance and Treasurer.
